Friday photo: cow forecast

Apparently, more than 60% of Brits believe that cows lying down indicates rain on the way. According to the Meteorological Office, the position of cattle in a field has nothing to do with weather conditions and probably means they’re just tired and needing a rest. I took this photograph yesterday morning when the sky began to look quite threatening. It did rain, but not until about six hours later. Make of that what you will.

  1. I think that cows lie down to chew the cud. Munching food usually makes me feel sleepy and fortunately, as a retired person with a carer who indulges my little foibles, I can often lie down for a post-prandial nap. Blissful.

  2. I’ve often wondered the same, Lorna, and felt that it happens too often to be a coincidence. However, I see that your Dad, who is the David Attenborough of cows, as it were, has clarified the situation and it now seems so obvious! I don’t ever see cows lying down while it’s raining, though….?

    1. That made us all laugh, Jo, the David Attenborough of cows. 🙂 You make an interesting point about them not lying down when it’s raining, I’ll have to keep an eye out for that.
